History Edmond was originally named Summit, thanks to the distinction of being the highest point along the Santa Fe rail line in the Oklahoma Territory and was a watering and sanding point for them in the 1880’s. Named after an engineer on the railroad, Summit’s name was changed by the Santa Fe railroad headquarters in Topeka after the Oklahoma Land Run of 1889. Although most of the old railroad infrastructure is gone, the Santa Fe, now BNSF, still runs on the railroad on the exact course it did over 100 years ago.
The first school in Edmond now stands as a historic monument at Second Street and the Boulevard, as does the first church, St. John the Baptist Catholic Church. Although no longer on the original site, the building still stands.
